Yakisugi Bowl - in Ash
Yakisugi Bowl from Ash
Size - D 13cm x H 8cm
Finish - Tung Oil and Waxes
A straight sided and very thin walled bowl.
Made from storm fallen Ash sourced from woodland adjoining the workshop in Kent.
The object has been scorched with a blowtorch then meticulously burnished, removing loose char and bringing the surface to a slight polish. Inspired by ‘Yakisugi’, a Japanese method of wood preservation using fire.
The orientation and form of this bowl is chosen to highlight some beautiful grain and the rim thickness is on the absolute limit of what is possible for Yakisugi. It’s quite improbable that it has survived the scorching process.
All pieces are stamped with my makers mark, a very subtle ‘H’ on the underside so as to not detract from the beauty of the object.
