Yakisugi Bowl from Ash

A closed-form and thin walled bowl

The form of this bowl and the thin walls create a huge amount of jeopardy when it comes to the burning process. It was a risk to take this on as many have failed in the past but thankfully it worked and I couldn’t be more delighted with the outcome. The rim is slightly out of round, a reminder that is has endured a 1000 degree flame. 

Sourced from trees that had to be felled due to Ash Dieback in woodland adjoining the workshop. 

The object has been scorched with a blowtorch then meticulously burnished, removing loose char and bringing the surface to a slight polish. Inspired by ‘Yakisugi’, a Japanese method of wood preservation using fire.

The orientation and form of this bowl is chosen to highlight some beautiful grain which was found after the initial exploratory cuts with the chainsaw. 

 All pieces are stamped with my makers mark, a very subtle ‘H’ on the underside so as to not detract from the beauty of the object.
