Wave Platter made from Flamed Beech

Finish - Hard Wax Oil

A simple and graphic waved detail which corresponds on both sides of the object. Some exceptionally beautiful grain and flame pattern through the piece.

This is storm fallen beech, sourced one hundred meters down the road from us. It’s a tree that I’ve walked past my whole life and was sad to see it had fallen in the strong winds a few years ago. 

I was even sadder to find it was destined to be firewood. After reasoning with the tree surgeons I managed to save a good portion of the main trunk. Being just under a meter in diameter it was a bit of an undertaking to get it back to the workshop.

The wood was delightfully clean but with a flame pattern unlike I had ever seen. Thick dark bands licking through the wood like fire.

This piece in particular I had been saving for something really special and I tackled it at a time when I felt ready to do it justice.

Suffice it to say, it’s up there with my all time favourite objects I’ve made.

One thing I absolutely love about it is how light reflects off the surface. At some angles you could be fooled into thinking it’s not wood at all but rather a water ripple frozen in time. In others you see the interplay of the flame and the wave, appreciating the grain for the beautiful bands of colour.
