This came from a tree that we earmarked for firewood a few years ago. It was an ash tree which came down in the 1987 storm and had been lying horizontal and but still alive and growing. Over the last 30 years branches began to grow vertically out of the trunk in a bid to reach the light and this piece reveals this junction between the old and the new.
The darker heartwood of the tree is on the left, migrating to the lighter sap wood followed by the new growth which is much more vigorous as you can see by the wider grain. The change in orientation of the tree is indicated as the grain starts to bend out to the right in the first picture.
This has created a remarkable effect where it appears the plate is laminated and composed of multiple elements. Suffice to say much of this tree was too special to burn, however this was the stand out piece.
Enko Series - The pieces are inspired by Japanese wooden tableware with the name Enko translating to ‘arc’. All these items can be drawn with simple arcs made up of different sized circles.
