Coved Yakisugi Bowl from Ash

Size - D 46cm x H 19cm

Finish - Tung Oil and Waxes

This is the largest piece I’ve ever made.

A sculptural bowl with an exterior coved detail extending to the foot of the piece. It sits on the final cove carved and in doing made to feel like it’s only lightly touching the surface.

Made from a storm fallen Ash sourced from woodland adjoining the workshop in Kent.

The object has been scorched with a blowtorch then meticulously burnished, removing loose char and bringing the surface to a slight polish. Inspired by ‘Yakisugi’, a Japanese method of wood preservation using fire.

It’s an anxiety inducing process with no guarantees of success. It either ends in heartbreak or elation.

The coved detail aims to add a visual quality playing with light and shadow, together with textural delight when the piece is in hand.

The heat of the flame has warped the rim slightly out of round which is worth mentioning however I feel it doesn’t detract from the visual appeal and I’m so pleased to be able to present this piece.

All objects are stamped with my makers mark, a very subtle ‘H’ on the underside so as to not detract from the beauty of the object.

- Tung Oil comes from a nut so please be aware if you have a nut allergy.

- hand wash / wipe clean only

- for display purposes only
