Coved Yakisugi Bowl - in Ash
Coved Yakisugi Bowl from Ash
Size - D 33cm x H 8cm
Finish - Tung Oil and Waxes
A sculptural bowl with an exterior coved detail extending to the foot of the piece. This one has some delightfully clean, even and calming grain patterns and turned thinly increasing the jeopardy somewhat when scorched.
Made from a storm fallen Ash sourced from woodland adjoining the workshop in Kent.
The object has been scorched with a blowtorch then meticulously burnished, removing loose char and bringing the surface to a slight polish. Inspired by ‘Yakisugi’, a Japanese method of wood preservation using fire.
The coved detail aims to add a visual quality playing with light and shadow, together with textural delight when the piece is in hand.
All pieces are stamped with my makers mark, a very subtle ‘H’ on the underside so as to not detract from the beauty of the object.
- hand wash / wipe clean only
- do not let fruit rot in the bowl
