Bowl - in Spalted Beech
Small Bowl made from Spalted Beech
Size - D 14.5cm x H 4cm
Finish - Hard Wax Oil
Sourced from storm fallen timber harvested from our woodland. The log which this piece came from has been left outside in the elements where it has started to spalt, creating these beautiful black lines and dappled markings.
By cutting and seasoning the wood, the spalting process stops. Then I have the pleasure of revealing what’s inside.
I’m really pleased with the shape and feel of this piece. A design I will certainly make again. Quite architectural in its simplicity with thin walls and a ring shaped foot.
This piece was saved using a coring tool from inside a larger bowl. It would have been turned into shavings but the wood was simply too nice to waste.
Although the piece is spalted the wood is very hard and stable so would suit a utilitarian role in your home if so desired.
