Polished Concrete Bowl - Small - No.1
A shallow concrete bowl handmade in our Kent studio.
The surface of the concrete is ground down to reveal the white silica sand and Portland stone aggregates inside, followed by polishing to give a beautifully smooth finish.
Portland stone chippings are a by product of the stone cutting mills and I've chosen it here to use as an aggregate because the light grey muted quality complements the white sand and cement to create a visually balanced surface that provides intrigue and interest up close and from afar.
The underside has also been ground and polished so I've decided to omit the usual cork base as I felt it would detract from the purity of the concrete form and its not really necessary in this case. Because of this there is a raw and solid quality to the bowls which I believe really elevates them past their predecessor.
For the first time I'm using linseed oil to seal the surface. Just the same for wood, linseed oil soaks into the grain of the concrete and dries which helps harden it but also protect it from stains. I want these bowls to be useful so I needed a finish which is readily available, food safe and easy to reapply.
This small bowl would work great as a side dish, perhaps for serving olives, or even to hold your keys. The finish allows for flexibility of use so use it how you will.
