Bowl - in Spalted Beech
Bowl made from Spalted Beech
Size - D 22cm x H 9cm
Finish - Hard Wax Oil
One of my favourite designs. A gently curving base meets slightly in-turned walls, combined with an extraordinary piece of wood. Spalting patterns like butterfly wings, I’ve never seen anything quite like it.
A food safe finish allows flexibility of use but would recommend this piece to be used as a small fruit bowl, for trinkets and alike or purely ornamental.
This is storm fallen beech I have specially cut and prepared within our woodland, actively encouraging the timber to spalt. I've been doing this for many years now so it's not all luck but you never know quite what you are going to get until you cut the piece open.
This batch I really couldn't believe my eyes. Very high quality spalting with almost no punky (soft) wood.
This really is the Goldilocks zone that is so difficult to come by. Cut the wood too soon and there are no patterns, cut the wood too late and it becomes a rotten mess.
Spalting happens during the initial process of decay. By cutting and seasoning the wood, the spalting process stops, immortalising the patterns within.
- do not let fruit rot in the bowl
- hand wash / wipe clean
